Reminders When You’re In A Season Of Waiting

The times that felt the heaviest in my life were during long seasons of waiting. One of the biggest challenges during a season of waiting is feeling like it’s never going to end or change. Especially when time passes and everything still appears the same. Whether it’s a dream job, spouse, child, or house—we’ve all experienced a season of waiting. Sometimes we can be so focused on what we’re waiting for that we forget to appreciate where we’re at. Here are some important reminders when you find yourself in a season of waiting:

There’s Purpose In Your Waiting

We live in a society of instant gratification. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve been guilty of this myself. It’s easy to feel upset when we’re not seeing immediate results. Or when we’re feeling like what we’re hoping for is never going to happen. Trust that your story is unfolding at the right time. When we start a novel, we can’t imagine how all the characters and story will come together. But as we reach the last page, we can look back and see how the entire story intertwined and unfolded the way it did. Your season of waiting is the same. There’s nothing more frustrating than not being able to understand why things are happening the way they are. You might not be able to see how it’ll all come together until the end, but it’ll always make sense looking backward. Never lose hope—there’s purpose in your waiting. Your story is your story, and it’ll unfold over time exactly how it’s supposed to.

Embrace Where You’re At, Not Where You Think You Should Be

Never allow yourself to get so caught up in what you’re waiting for, that you lose sight of where you are right now. When things do change, they’ll never be exactly like they are right now. Embrace exactly where you’re at, even if it feels like a quiet season. Even during a quiet season, there’s still so much room for growth, change, and redirection. The irony of what we’re waiting for is that when we finally have it, we may look back and wish we could’ve enjoyed those moments of stillness more. Always embrace where you’re at, not where you think you should be. Life always has a way of giving us more than we could imagine, we just have to be patient enough to receive it.

Waiting Is Active, Not Passive

Instead of losing yourself in the act of ‘waiting’, be active in the process of waiting. Experiencing a season of waiting doesn’t mean sitting around doing nothing while waiting for what you want. Trust the process despite your current circumstances. Believe in the timing of what you’re waiting for, even if it isn’t coming in the timing you expected. Take it as an opportunity to enjoy your life and pursue the things that make you happy.

Focus On Everything You Do Have, Rather Than On Everything You Don’t Have.

If you focus on everything you don’t have, you’ll miss out on everything you do have. In the years I was single before I met my spouse, I poured my energy into the people in my life and my job. I knew that one day when that door opened, my life would change. Obviously for the best, but sometimes we need to remind ourselves to appreciate all the things we do have in our lives. In the thickest depths during my seasons of waiting, I was always growing, evolving, and becoming. The in-between period is always a season of transformation. It helps redirect your steps towards growth, actively working towards what you want to come. This could be as simple as believing in what you’re waiting for—even when your situation looks the complete opposite. Sometimes we’re so focused on what we aren’t receiving, we fail to recognize what we do have in its absence.

Prioritize Yourself First In The Season Of Waiting

Reflect and direct your thoughts on making your self-care a priority during a season of waiting. Prioritizing your mental and physical health can help align the purpose of your waiting with a sense of direction. Sometimes I need to remind myself to slow down and take each moment as it comes. Focusing too far in the future or getting too far ahead will only cause us to lose sight of ourselves. Shift your mindset to focus on the things that allow you to feel grounded. It’s as simple as making yourself a priority, directing your energy to the things that matter to you most.

Never Compare Your Journey

Never compare what your journey looks like to the other people who have what you’re waiting for. There will always be somebody who has what you want during a season of waiting. But, just because they received it before you, doesn’t mean you won’t ever receive it. Don’t allow yourself to get caught up in the cycle of comparison because you are not them. All comparing does is make you feel worse and more behind (which you aren’t). What’s meant to be yours will always be yours, no matter how much time it takes. Even if you find yourself on a different path than you envisioned, it’ll always be worth it when you finally receive what you’re waiting for.

What we learn throughout the process of waiting can be just as important as what we’re waiting for.

Never rely on your feelings alone. Feelings can change from moment to moment, but the truth always remains the truth. Just because you’re waiting, doesn’t mean you’ll be waiting forever. There’s always purpose in the seasons of waiting. Learn what it’s teaching you, rather than focusing on what you’re looking for in its absence. Life will always give you what you need exactly when you need it.

I love this! I hadn’t thought about seasons of waiting but it’s so true that we go through these periods. I love that you emphasize embracing where you’re at and letting things happen in their own time.

Thank you so much! Sometimes I think that’s one of the hardest parts of waiting, is accepting things for how they are rather than how we expect or want them to be. It’s crucial to remind ourselves that it’s only a season. ♥️

I’m so glad that resonated with you!! I agree with staying productive—it’s the only thing that helps time pass in a season of waiting, especially when it feels like it’s crawling by!

I agree that the season of waiting can be frustrating but I feel like there’s definitely a purpose in our waiting and when we understand why we are doing so, then it becomes that much easier to bear. Awesome read!

It can definitely be one of the most challenging parts of the process, but SO important to help us push through until we receive what we’re waiting for. & thank you!!

So much wisdom in this article! I love that you spend time discussing the importance of not comparing your journey to others. It’s so easy to get derailed and discouraged when comparing your progress to others. Growth is never easy and it seldom occurs quickly. And everyone’s path is different. But beauty can be found in the waiting for those who pause to appreciate it.

Thank you for your kind words! Absolutely, comparing ourselves to others can be the biggest obstacle when we’re in a waiting period. I agree with you, growth happens over time & we’re all on our own unique journey.

It’s really a waiting game this thing called life. But the things you are waiting for will eventually happen someday if you never give up on it.

I love this line: “WHAT WE LEARN THROUGHOUT THE PROCESS OF WAITING CAN BE JUST AS IMPORTANT AS WHAT WE’RE WAITING FOR.” It is important and valuable for the thing or person we are waiting for. And sharing “waiting is active, not passive”. Seriously, that speaks a lot. God bless!
