How To Always Maintain A Positive Outlook

How to always maintain a positive outlook through difficult times

“Wrapped in grace, you will heal. You will carry the lessons you gathered in this season into the next.” – MHN

The picture above was a puzzle that I was gifted a year ago. Between the picture and the quote, I felt like there was a significant purpose to why I received the puzzle when I did, but I couldn’t understand the reasoning right away.

A few days later, I found out that I was being laid off from my job unexpectedly.

I worked from home, and I remember right after finding out, my husband happened to stop home. I was sobbing hysterically to him, wondering what I was possibly going to do with losing half of our income without warning. Deep down, I knew I had some time to figure it out, but time felt elusive to me. Up to this point, I was never laid off before, so I was trying to sort through those emotions while simultaneously trying to maintain a positive outlook through it all.

I knew that regardless of what circumstances were happening around me, I had to search for the good in all of it. I’m the type of person who believes when something ends, there’s always something better right around the corner. While there were days I felt down and unsure how I would find the strength to figure out my next direction, I also knew that I had to keep the right mindset and maintain a positive outlook. No matter what my situation looked like, or how slow things appeared to be moving.

When we learn how to find inner peace with the situations we’re dealing with, it’ll help us keep moving forward. Learn tips on how to always maintain a positive outlook no matter what you’re going through:

Shift Your Perspective

Whenever we experience a challenge or setback in our lives, it’s up to us to decide how we’re going to keep moving forward. Shifting your perspective to a positive mindset instead of a negative one, will help you push through with purpose. I couldn’t change the fact that I lost my job, and there was nothing that I could’ve done beforehand to prevent it from happening. It would’ve been easy to dwell on my negative thoughts, feeding into the feelings of unworthiness or convincing myself that I was never going to find another opportunity again.

Difficult times are an inevitable part of our lives. There are times when no amount of wishing or hoping can change our circumstances, but it’s up to us to decide what our perspective is going to be. Pay attention to your thoughts and feelings. What we tell ourselves and feed our minds with is what will produce. Especially if we choose to remain in a negative mindset, then our situation may never change.

We can’t control what happens, but we can alter our perspective. Commit to shifting your perspective to a positive mindset, which will enable you to push through the other side.

Look For The Silver Lining

Maintaining a positive outlook no matter what you’re going through will help you see the silver lining. A silver lining helps you hold onto the optimistic and positive outlook, expecting that something good is going to come out of your situation.

Instead of feeding into the thoughts of negativity about my job loss, including feeling like my situation would never change, I chose to maintain a positive outlook. I asked myself challenging questions, including:

  • What did this difficult situation teach me?
  • What are three positive things that came out of this?
  • Even if I’m not currently seeing it happen in my life yet, what is something I’m hoping for?

When something unexpectedly happens in our lives, or we experience a major disappointment, it’s hard to wrap our minds around why it happened. We want to understand, so we can process it and learn how to move on. But sometimes chapters close without warning. Whenever this happens, it’s crucial to remind yourself of all the positives of the situation. Rather than feeding into the negative feelings of doubt or uncertainty. Too often, we don’t realize the power of our words and how what we speak is what will produce. If you can look for the silver lining in the difficult situation you’re facing, you’ll find that it helps give you courage and hope to continue moving forward.

We can't always change our circumstances, but we can always shift our perspective.

Recognize The Areas You’re Growing in

Whenever we’re faced with a difficult situation that we can’t understand, it’s an opportunity that helps us grow. You become more resilient through the hard times when you look at the situation in a different light, because you’re able to recognize what it’s teaching you. It’s not to say that you’ll always bounce back immediately, but it’ll help you cope and deal with the challenges, difficulties, and setbacks that you might experience.

I felt like I grew in such a short amount of time after losing my job. It was up to me to learn how to pick up all the pieces and put them back together, so I could keep walking forward. It also renewed my sense of courage and hope to start going after the things I wanted and desired out of life. I dreamed of launching my own publication years ago, and had I not lost that job, my site wouldn’t be what it is today.

By maintaining a positive perspective no matter what life throws at us, we’ll be able to recognize the areas we can grow in. We just have to keep pushing and moving, knowing that eventually our feet will align to the path we’re supposed to walk on. Eventually, we’ll be exactly where we’re meant to be, seeing how we grew through even the worst of times.

Adapt And Accept Where You Are

Anything that we face is a matter of perspective. If we acknowledge where we’re at and adapt to our circumstances, it helps us learn how to face them and accept where we’re at. While we might initially experience disappointment or feelings of stress, learning how to deal with it in a healthy way, will help us accept the situation for what it is. We fall into feelings of loneliness and anxiousness when we can’t come to terms with why our situation is the way it is. For my particular situation, I knew no amount of wishing or hoping would change my circumstances, but I accepted that I was where I was at for a reason.

You aren’t losing anything by always maintaining a positive outlook no matter what you’re facing. Eventually, you’ll be exactly where you’re meant to be. It helps you not only appreciate where you are, but where you’ve been and most importantly, where you’re headed. Shift your mindset and perspective by adapting and accepting exactly where you are.

Focus On The Bigger Picture

Remember that you can still enjoy your life while you’re waiting for what you want. We all know that eventually our problems come to an end or get resolved, one way or another. It all works out how it’s supposed to. When things do come around, you’ll realize that you wasted all of that time being upset rather than focusing on the bigger picture, knowing that it all intertwines. While sometimes this requires work or changes on our end, keeping the right attitude will help you still enjoy your life even when faced with challenging times. If anything, it helps you see the bigger picture in all of it, knowing that your situation will always turn around for the best. As long as you’re willing to keep the positive outlook, and make the necessary changes as needed.

No matter what we’re going through in life, if we maintain a positive outlook, it’ll help us push through the difficult times. By always looking for the good in the situations you’re faced with, you’ll regain your power and inner peace. Eventually, everything will flow and connect, always working out exactly how it’s supposed to.

As a naturally cynical person, who is working on becoming more positive and choosing happiness even when the situation is dire, I needed to read this. Keep a positive outlook helps a lot mentally and it instills constant hope. Thank you for this.

It’s easier to complain about what’s going wrong rather than appreciate the good things in our lives…That’s why so many people can’t be happy. Thank you for this reminder that our perspective plays the most important role in how we perceive our lives and what happens to us 🙂

So true!! I’ve definitely been guilty of it myself. It becomes so much easier when we learn how to focus on the positives rather than dwelling on the negative things happening in our lives. Appreciate you reading!

Thank you for the inspiration. I too had a life changing event. Early in the morning, I went to the er the day after Valentines day, I was looking for help to manage my back pain, and was admitted for an mri. My surgeon (I had 5 discs fused 9 months ago) did not arrive until 10:30pm. And he tells me Im having surgery. Five days later I had reconstruction of the previous 5 disks and then 9 more. So my fussion went from my sacrum to my rib cage. It’s a minimum of 12 to 15 weeks off work. Out of nowhere-out of work for the second time this year!
So yes-ty for the inspiration-I’m working on my blog. I’m on week 5 with 8 to 10 left to go, and it’s a little better every day…

Wow! I’m so sorry that happened to you. That sounds like a lot, both physically and mentally. I remember a few years ago when I had a pin removed from my ankle and ended up dealing with an infection, prolonging the healing process. While physically I couldn’t walk without crutches for awhile, emotionally it was hard for me to keep a positive mindset throughout it all. Sorry to hear how long you have to be off of work, especially when you weren’t expecting it. But hopefully focusing and working on your site will bring you joy through your healing! Wishing you a quick recovery ❤️
