Important lessons to carry from 2023.

As the end of 2023 came to a close, I found myself reflecting on important lessons I learned more than I usually do. This past year felt like a rollercoaster—a ride that was winding with changes, loss, and new experiences. It was also a year marked by significant growth, sacrifice, and purpose. My biggest takeaway from 23′ was that no matter where we’re heading in life, the only way out is through. Changes throughout the year encouraged me to reflect on what truly matters. Not everything we hope for always happens according to our plans or how we once envisioned them, but treading through the unknown reminds us we will always make it to the other side. While I know things will continue changing and evolving in the year ahead, there are important lessons I hope to carry over with me from 2023:

1. Surround Yourself With People Who Bring Color To Your Life

Invest your time into people who deeply care about your well-being. In the essence of time, the greatest gift we can give ourselves is surrounding ourselves with the right people. The people who make us feel the best, who enrich our lives by simply being in it. Focus on those who bring you true happiness, the people who are a constant light in your life even when your light feels dim. Invest in relationships with others that always leave you feeling better. Who we choose to surround ourselves with can impact our mental and physical health—making it even more important to channel your energy towards the people who deserve it the most. Focus and surround yourself with the people who add color to your life, not take it away.

2. Embrace Each Moment As It Comes

Flow with the river of changes, not against the current. All the preparation in the world couldn’t prepare us for the uncertainties of change. We can’t stop change from happening, but we can learn how to accept each aspect of it as it comes. You might feel the weight of the heaviness from one thing piling on top of another in the midst of change, but there’s always a calm in the storm eventually. Never underestimate what change and new experiences can bring you. With each loss always comes a gain, even if you’re not able to see the reasoning why things are happening the way they are. Learning how to accept the flow of changes rather than resisting them will help you cope with it just a bit easier.



3. Let Go Of Anything That Makes You Unhappy

Release anything that drags you down. This includes people, opinions, negative energy, or mindsets. There is purpose in what we lose and the things we gain in return. It can be hard to let go of certain things or people, especially if it’s what we’re used to. But it’s always necessary if it’s interfering with our happiness. Never underestimate the power of letting go of something not meant for you. Be conscious of the damage of holding onto something that isn’t right for you anymore. It might be hard to let go at first, but always trust that you’ll always have exactly what you need when you need it.

4. Do What Feels Right For You

Your journey isn’t anybody else’s journey. Living up to somebody else’s expectations will only leave us feeling defeated and drained. If something feels right to you, it doesn’t have to make sense to anybody else. Your two feet were made to walk your path, which will always look different from somebody else’s path. Even if you aren’t where you want to be, it doesn’t mean you aren’t where you’re supposed to be. It took many years for me to realize that no matter what you are or aren’t doing in life, somebody is always going to have an opinion.

This year taught me the significance of learning how to let go of what other people think and focusing on what I know is best for me. If you live your life based on what other people think, you’ll always end up falling short in one aspect or another. It’s important to always follow in doing what’s right for you, even if it only makes sense to you.

5. Allow Your Body To Rest

This past year slowed me down in the best way possible. A few months into 2023, I realized I was shoving my health to the side, both mentally and physically. I allowed myself to get so caught up in what I was doing that it was hard for me to separate and shut my brain off at the end of the day. Once I started setting aside extra time I needed for myself, I always felt refreshed with a new and clear perspective. Making your health a priority is crucial in allowing your body and mind to rest, reset, and recover.

6. Set Boundaries and Stick By Them

Just as setting aside time for your body to rest is essential, so is setting boundaries and sticking by them. Establishing boundaries can feel uncomfortable at first, especially if you’re a person who says ‘yes’ all the time, despite how you feel. Saying ‘no’ can be the most empowering feeling, especially when it comes to setting healthy boundaries. There’s a notable difference between sacrifices and boundaries, and it’s vital to establish what that means for you. Put yourself and your needs first without sacrificing your mental health.



7. Give Yourself The Same Compassion You Give Others

We’re always harder on ourselves than others. Give yourself grace for the things you don’t understand, and patience for when things are taking longer than you hoped. The other day I read a poem on how we should look at the year through a series of moments, rather than through time. The moments we experience can bring out different versions of us that evolve and change over time. Love yourself for all the versions you’ve been, and all the versions of you that are to come. Even if things aren’t going how you once envisioned them, trust everything will always work out for the best. You’re working exactly with what you have and what you know, and one day you will be where you want and need to be. Always give yourself the same compassion you give others.

The pressure of a new year can stir up a lot of emotions. Remind yourself that you don’t always have to become a ‘new version’ of yourself. We’re farther today than we were yesterday. We’re always improving, changing, and evolving. Take each moment and experience as it comes, embracing every change that a new year brings. Don’t be hard on yourself if you’re not where you thought you should be—you’ll get there when you’re meant to, and not a moment sooner.

    This is a solid reminder of what to hang onto and what to let go of. 2023 was a challenging year for me, too, but I definitely learned a good bit from it. I am thoroughly planning on getting through 2024 in a better form.
